Arizona Ignition Interlock Installers are responsible for fitting vehicles with breathalyzer devices to test a driver's breath for alcohol before vehicle operation. Certified ignition interlock devices (CIID) and their Installers are highly regulated, as these devices are essential to prevent drinking under the influence, but are prone to tampering
- All Ignition Interlock Installers in Arizona must be certified by the Arizona Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division (ADOT MVD). Those who wish to get this certification must provide a financial guarantee in the form of a $200,000 Arizona Interlock Installer Bond.
What is an Arizona Ignition Interlock Installer Bond?
An Arizona Ignition Interlock Installer Bond ensures that an Installer will conduct business ethically and lawfully. If their misconduct causes financial harm, the surety bond guarantees that the affected person gets reimbursed for their losses.
Every AZ Ignition Interlock Installer Bond is a contract between three parties:
- Principal – the Ignition Interlock Installer that needs to get bonded.
- Obligee – the organization asking for the bond (ADOT).
- Surety – the surety company issuing and financially backing the bond (Ex. Lance Surety Bonds). They initially pay any bond claims, but the Installer is required to pay them back.
Why is the Bond Required?
An Ignition Interlock Installer Bond is in place to deter Ignition Interlock Installers from committing fraud or operating unlawfully. Specifically, the bond protects anyone who uses an Installer's services to equip a motor vehicle with a mandatory ignition interlock device.
- The bond guarantees that if an Installers fails to conduct business per the Arizona Revised Statutes Title 28, Chapter 4, Article 3, they will pay for the financial harm caused by their misconduct—up to the full amount of the bond ($200,000).
Anyone with an Arizona Ignition Interlock Installer Certification needs an active Ignition Interlock Installer Bond.
How Much Does an Arizona Ignition Interlock Installer Bond Cost?

We had a bond applicant call us, thinking that the bond amount they needed for the AZ Ignition Interlock Installer License was $25,000. Our surety expert informed them that while that used to be the required bond amount, ADOT now requires $200,000 for all licensees.
With this increase, the application process remains largely the same. However, our underwriters may now look at your business financials—as opposed to just your credit score.
