What is a Wisconsin Auto Dealer Bond?
A Wisconsin auto dealer bond, formally filed on WisDOT Dealer Bond form MV2511, is a surety bond required by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation before many dealer licenses can be issued.
It is a financial guarantee that your dealership will operate in compliance with Wisconsin law and deal honestly with customers. If you fail to do so, a harmed customer or other aggrieved person can make a claim against your bond to recover their losses.
Unlike insurance, which protects you, a surety bond primarily protects your customers and the state. If a valid claim is paid out, you are responsible for reimbursing the surety company.
Every surety is a contract between 3 parties:
- The Obligee: State of Wisconsin, through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Dealer & Agent Section
The state authority that requires the bond as a condition of licensing. They set the bond amount and terms.
- The Principal: You, the dealer
You purchase the bond and are bound by its terms. If a valid claim is paid, you must reimburse the surety.
- The Surety: such as Lance Surety Bonds
We underwrite the bond and guarantee payment to claimants up to the bond amount if you default on your obligations.
How Much Does a Wisconsin Auto Dealer Bond Cost?
The cost of a Wisconsin auto dealer bond starts at $500 for the standard $50,000 motor vehicle dealer bond. Bond premiums are typically between 1% and 3% of the bond amount for applicants with strong credit, so between $500 and $1,500 per year for the standard retail dealer bond.
It is important to understand the difference between the bond amount and what you actually pay. The $50,000 is the maximum a claimant can recover against your bond. It is the coverage limit set by the state, not your cost. What you pay is the annual premium, which is a small percentage of that amount.
Your premium is quoted individually based on three factors: your personal credit score, your experience in the industry, and any prior bond claims on your record. Because each surety company weighs these factors differently, the same applicant can receive meaningfully different quotes from different underwriters.
Even applicants with poor credit can get bonded. A lower credit score means a higher premium, not an automatic denial.
Wisconsin has different bond amounts depending on the dealer license type. Here is a breakdown of the common requirements and the premium costs based on your credit score.

Who Needs a Bond in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin dealer license applicants may need a surety bond or another approved form of financial coverage before a license is issued. Common bonding requirements include the following.
- Retail motor vehicle dealers - Dealers selling or leasing vehicles to the public need $50,000 financial coverage. WisDOT requires a license if you acquire even one vehicle with the intention of selling it.
- Wholesale dealers - Dealers selling only to other licensed dealers need a $25,000 surety bond or irrevocable letter of credit.
- Wholesale auction dealers - Auction dealers generally need either $25,000 or $50,000 in financial coverage, depending on the auction and dealer license combination.
- Motorcycle dealers - Motorcycle-only dealers need a $5,000 surety bond or irrevocable letter of credit. If the business also takes autos or light trucks as trade-ins and sells them to the public, the coverage amount must be $50,000.
- Moped dealers - Moped-only dealers can meet the $5,000 financial coverage requirement with a financial statement, irrevocable letter of credit, or Dealer Bond MV2511.
- Recreational vehicle dealers - Wisconsin RV dealers must maintain $50,000 financial coverage through a dealer bond or irrevocable letter of credit.
- Salvage dealers - Salvage dealer applicants may use a $25,000 surety bond in place of the financial statement, and the bond must remain in force for the full two-year license period.
- Lessor bond, if applicable - If your business will be listed as the lessor on the title of any vehicle sold, WisDOT may require a separate lessor bond in addition to the dealer bond.
What Happens If Someone Files a Claim?
The bond protects aggrieved persons from financial loss caused by dealer fraud, misrepresentation, or failure to follow Wisconsin dealer laws. A claim can be filed for violations such as:
- Selling a vehicle without proper title documents or failing to transfer title properly
- Misrepresenting a vehicle's condition, accident history, mileage, or ownership status
- Retaining customer deposits without delivering the vehicle or refunding the customer
- Failing to pay required taxes, fees, liens, or amounts owed under a dealer transaction
- Any other breach of Wisconsin motor vehicle dealer law covered by the bond
The maximum payout per bond is the bond's face amount, such as $50,000 for a retail motor vehicle dealer bond. After any payout, you as the principal are liable to reimburse the surety.
How the Claims Process Works?
- Consumer or claimant contacts the surety company directly to file a claim
- The surety investigates the claim to determine its validity
- If the claim is valid, the surety pays the claimant up to the bond's face amount
- The dealer, as principal, is then required to reimburse the surety for any amounts paid out
- Claims on your record can significantly increase your bond premium at renewal
Renewing Your Wisconsin Auto Dealer Bond
Wisconsin dealer licenses are issued for a two-year licensing period, and your bond or other financial coverage must remain active throughout that period.
Lance Surety will contact you well in advance of your renewal date to help prevent any lapse in coverage. If your bond expires or is canceled and is not immediately replaced with another comparable bond, your license may be suspended or revoked until replacement coverage is filed.
Wisconsin dealer bonds may be issued on a continuous basis, meaning the bond remains active from year to year as long as the annual premium is paid. The MV2511 bond form states that a continuous bond creates a new and separate obligation for each 12-month period.
At renewal, the surety company will review your credit. Maintaining a strong credit profile can help keep your premium costs low.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a Wisconsin dealer bond?
For most applicants, bonds are issued the same day, often within minutes of completing the application. Your bond can be delivered digitally by email, and you can request a paper copy if your Wisconsin licensing packet requires an original signed bond form.
What is the difference between the bond amount and the bond premium?
The bond amount, also called the face amount or penal sum, is the maximum protection offered to claimants. For most Wisconsin retail motor vehicle dealer licenses, that amount is $50,000. This is not what you pay. The bond premium is the annual cost you pay to purchase the bond, which is a percentage of the bond amount, typically 1–3% for applicants with good credit. So a $50,000 bond often costs $500–$1,500 per year.
What happens if my bond lapses?
If your bond lapses, you are no longer in compliance with Wisconsin dealer financial coverage rules. WisDOT can suspend or revoke the dealer license if the bond expires or is canceled and replacement coverage is not filed on time.
Can my bond be cancelled?
Yes, a surety bond can be cancelled. Wisconsin Dealer Bond form MV2511 states that the surety may terminate the bond by giving 60 days written notice to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, and notice must also be sent to the principal. If the bond is terminated and not replaced, the dealer license may be suspended or revoked until comparable coverage is obtained.
Do I need a bond for every salesperson I employ?
No. Wisconsin requires dealers to have at least one licensed salesperson or representative for several dealer license types, but it does not require a separate salesperson bond like some other states do. The dealer bond is tied to the licensed dealership and required financial coverage, not to each salesperson individually.
Do I need a separate bond for each dealership location?
Generally yes. The bond should match the legal business name and dealer location listed on the Wisconsin dealer license application. If you operate multiple licensed locations or hold more than one dealer license type, contact us so we can help confirm the correct bond amount and filing requirements.
It's FREE. No Obligations. Approval in Minutes.
